Whats wrong with my angelfish?

Question: Whats wrong with my angelfish?

(Posted by: 3xTLC on 2010-07-27 07:53:50)

I've had my angelfish for over 3 years now and he's been fine until a few days ago. It started when i noticed both his eyes look swollen and sore and one of them has like pink cotton wool like thing on the underneath of his eye and he started swimming in circles. I isolated him from the other fishes and he seemed to be doing a lot better. he was swimming better and acting normal as before, the pinkness doesn't look as bad either, however when i put him back in the tank he goes back to the way he was before, swimming in circles, staying at the top and now bumping into things. i dont want to out him back in isolation as it will cuse more stress.. I really don't want him to die as he's the best looking fish in my tank and i've had him so long. So any advice on what to do or buy for him is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :) Well i upgraded my tank to a 3ft one, let the water cycle for a week before putting the fish in. In my tank i have 4 neons, a red eye tetra, 4 peppered corys and a small black striped fish i dont know the name for. He swims around with the neons.. none have ever shown agression towards the angelfish and vice versa. I also looked on internet at the diseases but no descriptions/ pictures matched mine.

The swollen eyes are the major symptom of pop-eye and the pink cotton wool is likely cotton-wool disease. Both are bacterial infections. Isolate the fish in question and treat with an anti-bacterial. Treat soon before the cotton-wool impacts internal parts of the fish. Go ahead and do a major (50-75%) water change in your main tank also, and keep the rest of your livestock under observation for a few days.

I think you should clean your tank. there may be something in the water causing this. otherwise you should put him in isolation and try putting each of your fish in with him and see what happens. ~Lil Stromie (:

Have you got any fin nippers in your tank? E.g. Tiger barbs? That's how my angel fish behaved, and sadly died... I've learned my lesson - NEVER put fin nippers in with long finned fish. It might be that it's getting old, maybe?

I've heard of a couple of fish diseases that can cause those symptoms as well so you may want to try looking up Tropical fish diseases on google. Also try listing any recent changes to your tank because they can provide many valuable clues as well. Do you have a plecostamous that is more then a year old? These fish can have a very bad temperament when they reach maturity as well and they can (and do) suck the eyes and scales off of other aquarium fish. Some fish stores will exchange you pleco's for a younger one but this still may not be the answer. Please list all of the other fish and any changes you have made to the tank recently even if you think it might not be important and put the Angel fish back into isolation temporarily. Also clean your filter out as a precaution (but use treated water rather then straight tap water).
